La mayor parte de la gente asocia la apicultura con la producción de miel, y es que, sin duda, es el producto más conocido. Cuando no existía el azúcar de remolacha ni de caña, y mucho menos los jarabes de almidón, se utilizaba la miel para endulzar los alimentos. Diversas civilizaciones dejaron registros de sus conocimientos sobre el uso de la miel como alimento y como medicamento, y otras transmitieron sus saberes en forma oral a través de las generaciones. Otro producto apícola conocido desde la antigüedad por egipcios, griegos y romanos, es el propóleos. Durante la edad media su uso quedó relativamente olvidado, pero afortunadamente los conocimientos sobre sus propiedades antimicrobianas se conservaron en la medicina popular. En épocas más recientes, los estudios sobre su composición y sus posibles aplicaciones en la salud, la industria alimentaria y la terapéutica vegetal, confirmaron la eficacia de sus principios bioactivos.
